Where Do You Start Finding Your Purpose?

Saw "True Grit" last night - what a story of pursuing a purpose in life. While I certainly don't condone revenge as a healthy or worthwhile purpose for a person's life - the story certainly gives a great overview of pursuing a purpose in life. If you haven't seen it - check out the trailer:

You can also read the book: Amazon - True Grit

Let's discuss the outline of purpose found in the book.

  1. One thing early on in the movie - A crises in life can shape what one might pursue as a purpose. What do you think?

  2. So what kind of crises has happened to you, that would shape your life? A death, a birth, a happy moment, a conversation, a special person, a special place, an event? How does a crises shape your life?

  3. The various crises, large and small, that have affected me have all been negative - no happy moments! Just about all have led to a better direction in life, though, and in retrospect, it's been clear to me since 1975 that God has been behind everything! No crises were resolved quickly, and there were always many months (or years) of questioning and doubt and even agony before it was clear where everything was leading.

The most profound was undoubtedly the unwanted divorce -- which forced me to get in gear and find work that would support myself and my young children. The result was my more-than-30-year teaching career in California. It was not an easy path, though, nor a fast one - but I doubt I would have pursued that career under different circumstances. I know "hindsight is 20-20," but really - only God could have worked such a successful solution to a bad situation. I certainly couldn't.

  4. With negative events in life - how does that shape what we don't want? Which of itself can be a good thing. Example might look like - growing up in the home of an alcholic could lead one down the path to becoming an alcholic or it might produce someone who goes the opposite direction. You could insert any situation into the formula: Event(E)+ Response(R) = Outcome(O) and "see" what could/would happen. The question might really be for us: How do I choose the proper response? What do you think?

  5. Wouldn't it be amazing if you could predict the future and be right? What if you could leave out the parts of the future that you could be wrong about? What if you, with certainty, could anticipate where you needed to be? How would that shape your choices for pursuing your purpose life?
